Couple of Driveline Questions

I wanted to separate this out of my Chevette build thread so I could get some discussion going without going way off topic on the other thread.

I'm starting to think about driveline options (rear end and tranny) for my Chevette. Let me list some criteria first to give you an idea of where I'm going with the build.

1. Needs to be able to handle around 350 Hp., even though I probably won't go that strong. Not sure about the torque figures, but the most torquey engine I'll have in there will be a 4L Buick V6. I probably won't do that, though because that will be a lot of weight over the front wheels and I'd like to keep it road course worthy. I'm probably going to turbocharge the 1.6L four-banger, but I might step up to an Ecotec if I swap out the engine.

2. Needs to be reasonably light. I'm trying to keep this thing around 2000 pounds. I don't mind adding a bit of weight for strength purposes, but it's not going to see a lot of quarter-mile launches. I might run some autocrosses, but since I live in BFE there aren't a lot of options for the type of automotive activities I like without a lot of travel.

3. Needs to be reasonably inexpensive. I would prefer to find something in a salvage yard. It also needs to have readily available parts if it's something I need to rebuild. Also needs to have some aftermarket support since I'll probably want a posi or locker in there, and I'll probably have to put in a new ring and pinion in the diff. Should also be adaptable to a good braking system.

So, here are a few candidates. First, diffs.

1. S-10 diff. I'm pretty sure it meets most of the above, and I can probably narrow it myself and order some axles.

2. GM H-body diff. It's about the same as the S-10, but it has mounts on the center section for a torque arm. I like the idea of changing the car over to a 2 link with torque arm and panhard bar. I don't totally like the Chevette's suspension setup and the H-body setup would offer some adjustability.

3. 80's-90's GM F-body diff. It's a lot like the H-Body setup but I think it may be stronger, especially the later versions.

Now, trannies:

1. Chevette 5-speed. Pretty obvious if I can find a 5-speed car. Not sure if it's strong enough for the horsepower requirements, and not sure about the availability, especially one in good shape. I think it is a version of the Borg Warner T-5, so it might be OK.

2. H-Body Borg-Warner T-50. Not the strongest tranny in the world, but it lived behind the 200+HP Buick V6 in my 79 Sunbird for a long time. It took a lot of abuse, too!

3. F-Body Borg-Warner T-5. It's a proven design and meets most of the criteria above.

I am willing to consider other options, and might consider a 6-speed if I can find one that doesn't add too much weight and have too much rotational drag.

I'm probably going to run a 4.11 or 4.55 rear gear, so I'm certainly going to want a tranny with an overdrive gear or two if I get to go on a Power Tour or something like that.

Any suggestions or votes? Also, I'm interested in any weaknesses in any of my choices.

Bump again, guys. I'd like some thoughts on what to use. I think I'm going to use some of that Welder Series stuff they used on the 49 Chevy that Trucks is building. I'm probably going to convert it to triangulated 4-link and it already has the lower links. I might have a line on 10-bolt Posi, but that might be overkill and overweight.

probably be easiest to just get a junked S10 and pull the lot. Get the rear end, the t-5 and a 60° engine of the 2.8 catagory. Since you'll be wanting to rebuild that engine anyhow, it's an easy bump up to 3.4L with internal components from the Camaro engine. Since you can go straight carb with that engine, you even avoid all the grief of trying to bodge in a computer.

Well, I was kind of waiting on doing a 60 Degree engine until I start my Cavalier Nomad build. I've got my eye on a wrecked Camaro that might have all of that stuff anyhow.

I'll probably stay 4-cyl with the Chevette since one of the goals is keeping the weight down. I'm leaning toward just keeping the stock diff if I can get a limited slip or locker for it. If I go V6 I'll be going Buick.

However, you do have a great idea if I decide to go with that S10 diff.

Up here in Canuckistan, that Buick engine is rarer than hen's teeth. But finding a performance rear for a stock chevette housing ...? I really want to see how that search works out for ya.

I'm the first to admit I'm a slut for the 60° ever since I had on in an old Celebrity station wagon. Gotta love an engine that doesn't have enough power to kill itself no matter how badly you abuse it.

I've always wanted to get into a 60 degree 6, but never really found a use for it until this Cavalier idea came along. I'm looking for a Cav wagon (along with a same-year Z24 I can scavange parts off of) but it's going to have to be cheap because I'm tossing everything out and going RWD with a 60 Degree 6. My original plan is to use a mid-80s Corvette transaxle and an independent rear suspension, but that might prove to be too expensive with too much engineering needed.

Anyhow, before I do that I've got to finish the Chevette. I do have a Buick V6 and a couple of trannies for my 80 Sunbird Formula, but I really don't want to use that one in the Chevette because I also have the turbo setup out of an early hair dryer Regal I'm going to put in the 'Bird, but I've got a ton of bodywork on that one.

The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning toward keeping the Chevette's 1.6 and going with a K04 turbo off an Audi 1.8 and a pair of Weber side-draft carbs in a pressure box. K04s are cheap because they are usually the first thing that gets tossed in favor of a bigger one on a lot of VW/Audi projects. I don't think I'll break 200 RWHP, but it'll only be a hair over 2000 Lbs. I might go for an S10 rear, which I can yank out of my dad's if I don't rework it. One of the guys at work also has a Posi 10 bolt I might try to buy, too, but that's starting to get away from the lightweight nature of this project.
