Hey Gang-
My next project is a '49 Chevy 1/2 ton. I want to drop in a big block and a 6 speed for the drivetrain, so I figure boxing the frame is pretty much a given.
I'm thinking I will make my own patterns and transfer them to 1/8" plate. Might as well go full length of the frame if I'm going to do it at all...
Would appreciate any pointers, thoughts, comments etc. as I have never done one and any advice is VERY welcome.
Thanks!

Well Guy my opinion before you start doing a whole bunch of work and time I would sit down and decide what I want out of the truck or what you want it to do.I owned a 1950 chevy 1/2 ton they've got a suspension made for hauling and thats about it' brakes are not good they don't corner all that good either. But the minimum would be box the frame I did mine had a 350 L46 block 4bolt mains with an Indy style crankshaft, mushroom tappet cam don't recall the grind 13to1 compression dual four cross ram intake that thing would just about make you fill your drawers.I had to put ladder bars on to stop spring wrap and I was always having to add or change something to get what I wanted but I didn't have access to all the kinds of parts we have today.Take a look at Art morrison's frames online to see what kinds of changes you might do to get it where you want it to be. You've scene Lou's work on frames look there for ideas he does some damn fine work.If it was me I would go with full frame, independent front suspension and coil overs with 4 link or 4 bar in the rear.Have fun and let us see what you decide to do.

Thanks Rick-
You are exactly right. The suspension as is won't work for what I want.
The plan is to go with a Heidt's (or similar) IFS and get the modern rack and pinion steering, coilovers etc. Possibly air ride but I haven't decided yet. Out back I want a 4 link on a 9" Ford rear end. I've seen Lou's 4 link system and plan to go with that for sure.
The truck has been in the family since new so I plan to leave the body exactly as is. Underneath it will be totallly modern and much fun to drive. At the moment I'm pondering a 454 hooked up to a 6L80E trans...
Thanks Again for the input! You are right about Lou, I'd never have the nerve to take all this on if I hadn't watched his show so much.

Guy have you decided what how you're going to use the pickup,is it going to be a fun cruiser maybe once in awhile at the drag strip or for show?

Rick-
This will be more of a cruiser than anything else. I might make a pass down the 1/4 mile just to have a time slip, but that will be about it.
I would actually like to drive it to Paso Robles for their show, maybe even join the Power Tour one of these days...
