I have a dirt bike i'm ready to buy. However i would like Lou's opinion as to wether an aluminum bike engine can be tig welded? It has a small crack at the bottom, and it's leaking a little case oil.

Lou... What say you brother?

If it's a deal do it, it can certainly be welded.

It can be done, but it might cost more to weld it than to get another case or engine for that matter.

If you buy a new case that means you have to disassemble the motor and while you have it apart you might as well freshen it up, welding up the case is certainly cheaper than a tear down and rebuild. JB Weld is a really cheap fix if it doesn't fix it grind it off and TIG it up.

It will be very hard to get a good weld if you don't get all the oil drained out and the crack cleaned out really well.

I have welded motorcycle engine a few times with stick and with tig. And all came out great with no issues at all. Just make sure the surface is clean before you start welding it and groof it if you can for penetration . I always did the ole preheat the metal before I welded it. But that was me and ya don't have to do that. But, if your not comfortable with a welder especially with aluminum do get a pro welder to do the task for ya. And like everyone else has said if it's cheaper to get a new case compared to getting it welded then by all means get the new case. It really comes down to funds and skills to really get the answer that you want. No pun intended at all
