Gawd! I had a girlfriend who drove one of those. Their family had about 4 of 'em. Heck, I used to work with a guy that had a V8 Gremlin. He said it was factory. That was a handful.

When I first got appointed to the FDNY my 1st house was 85 engine which was in Fort Apache South Bronx ( 169 st and Boston Road, you know where that is Lou ) well I had a 76 Gremlin X it ran and I figured the locals wouldn't touch it because it was so ugly. I was wrong, first they stole the battery, so I go buy a new one next nite at work we're out on a run come back the hoods up and my new one is gone, it was so bad we started stockpiling batteries from car fires and abandoned cars. The ultimate kick in the ass was when I got both front seats stolen and I had to sit on a milk crate and propped up a 2x10 for my back to get home. Those were crazy times, the South Bronx was like a war zone, but us Firemen loved it.

When I was a cop, we would watch houses where a battery was reported stolen. Usually, it was a junky battery. However, the thief knew where there was going to be a new one shortly. As soon as the car moved, it was ripe for another battery theft. I got a reputation of being psychic. When we checked one van, it had 25+ batteries in back. The guy ran a used tire and battery shop.

Nowadays they look for GPS and satellite radios, break the window with a brick steal and run. So I've learned to take everything out when I park.

Clem - By the way i talked to the guy that I was talking about and he has 4 gremlins. But, he's not gonna sell any of them at all.
